Chapter 3 A mass-movement site in Silurian strata

R.G. Cooper

Introduction

Silurian strata are not well known for mass movements in Britain. Jones and Lee (1994) list only 322 sites, of which 86% fall into the 'unspecified' type category. Of those that have had their type identified, 30% (13) are compound, 28% (12) are translational, 14% (6) are single rotational and 12% (5) are topples. The site selected for the GCR is none of these. It was, rather, selected as an example of a site over which there is little agreement. Its location in an area of Silurian strata (Figure 3.1) rather than hard rock of some other geological system is, largely, incidental, as it is a product of the denudation system rather than a feature determined by age or rock-type.
