Chapter 2 Geological excursions

Eight excursions are described (Figure 6), seven of which, taken together, cover the full Cambrian and Ordovician stratigraphic succession. The eighth is concerned entirely with Quaternary deposits. The stratigraphic excursions have been routed to show the principal characteristics of each formation, but details about structure, intrusions and Quaternary deposits are also included. In addition, three of the excursions include visits to the principal types of mineral deposit found in the Harlech dome.

The excursions are presented in stratigraphic order, but this is not necessarily the most convenient order in which to follow them. An estimate of the length of time that should be allowed for each is given. All eight excursions, which together form a good introduction to the local geology, can be undertaken within a week.
