Excursions 5 and 6: north and east coastline
The solid geology of this part of the island consists of fossiliferous Jurassic rocks on the shore and at low level, beneath the narrow plateau of Beinn Bhuidhe, which is surrounded by formidable basalt cliffs and fringed by landslips. Access is from Howlin in the north-west (Excursion 5) or Kildonnan in the south-east (Excursion 6). Both allow time for observing fossils. The extension of Excursion 6 enables the whole area to be explored in one long day, preferably before the bracken is high and with fine weather forecast. Enquire locally about transport to or from Howlin.
Excursion 5: Eilean Thuilm and Sgor Sgaileach — reptile bones and a columnar sill (Route map 5)
Excursion 6: The east coast: basalt columns, fossils and landslips (No route map)
